Keeping dietary- healthy eating is a recipe for healthy living. Wrong diet can cause health problems. Eat less, or conversely, too much eat can cause health problems too. Besides health, other things that is of considerable concern people is a matter of appearance. To get the ideal appearance and slim, many people who go on a diet. One of a popular and healthy diet is the Mediterranean diet.

Mediterranean diet usually means eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, reduce the consumption of red meat and processed foods. While the fat is obtained from olive oil.

Eating patterns in a Mediterranean diet full of fresh ingredients and low fat foods mentioned are very useful to prevent the occurrence of dementia. When tracked dietary of the respondents, are known to those who frequently eat salad, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and rarely eat foods high in fat and red meat, are the respondents who were free of dementia.

The experts believe, the combination of nutrients found in fish, nuts, and vegetables, are usually consumed the Mediterranean can maintain the function of brain cells.

Mediterranean diet and low-fat diet recommended for weight loss in those who are obese. This diet not only lose weight, but also to control blood sugar levels, delaying the need for reduction in blood sugar and reduce the risk of heart attack.

Low-carbohydrate diets are known as Mediterranean-style is more effective than other low-fat and calories diet that is used to control diabetes (type 2). Therefore, in the health world, the Mediterranean dietary is highly recommended because it proved to alienate diseases.

Mediterranean diet also provides a protective effect against insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance means the body's cells can not absorb sugar from the blood circulation. Insulin controls the amount of hormones, including the exact number of hormones necessary for ovulation. Mediterranean diet contains nutrients that help the body cleanse sugar from the blood circulation so the body does not require a lot of insulin to do so. This makes the body more easily maintain the balance of reproductive hormones.

Women who followed the Mediterranean dietary tend to have better levels of fertility. This means they eat more vegetables, fruits, fish, and Cereal intact. For women who are still in the productive age and planning to become pregnant, there is no harm in adopting this dietary. But women who did have problems with their reproductive organs, there are no data that said this diet could increase the chances of pregnancy

Pregnant Women who consume milk or yogurt that contains good bacteria routinely are less likely to suffer preeclampsia. what is preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia, sometimes called toxemia is a condition that could be experienced by any pregnant woman. Preeclampsia occurs when a pregnant woman experiences an increase in blood pressure suddenly after 20 weeks of pregnancy, although in some cases there were found in early pregnancy. The signs are usually in the form of swelling of the hands and face.

Pre eclampsia is marked by increased blood pressure which is followed by increased levels of protein in the urine. What are the symptoms of preeclampsia?

In addition to swelling in the feet and hands, protein in urine and high blood pressure, preeclampsia symptoms that warrant concern are:
1. Weight loss increased dramatically as a result of the accumulation of fluid in the body.
2. Abdominal pain.
3. Severe headache.
4. Changes in reflexes.
5. Decrease in urine production or even not urinate at all.
6. There is blood in urine.
7. Dizziness.
8. Excessive nausea and vomiting.

In one study, researchers found that more than 33 thousand Norwegian women who consume milk or yogurt every day during pregnancy are less likely to have preeclampsia.

Of all participants who took probiotics, only a 4.1 percent who experienced pre eclampsia, while 5.6 percent did not experience.

When other factors involved such as weight, education, and smoking, consumption of probiotics is still on effect of reducing the risk by 20 percent.

Dr. Bo Jacobsson, a researcher at the Institute of Public Health in Oslo said that the results must be followed up. However, he said, the effect will be better when probiotics are consumed through the capsule, not food. The results of this study have been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology September 2011 edition.

Every parent would want their children grow up healthy and smart. One factor to make it happen is environmental influences or parenting parents. Is it possible to sharpen intelligence of children at an early stage so that later when they grow up to be a genius? Yes! All that is needed to improve the ability of the infant brain lies their parents.

Here are some tips that you can begin to sharpen intelligence of the baby's brain, especially in the first two years of their life.

1. breastfeeding
Breast milk provides countless nutrients that are important to baby's growth. One of the most important element is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is a good essential fatty acids for brain development. Many food companies have tried to replicate this material in lab and add it to baby foods. But no one could match the naturally of DHA as found in breast milk.

2. start early
Start early even before they were born! Do this by ensuring expectant mothers have good health and adequate nutrition. Avoid harmful substances such as alcohol, drugs, smokes, and mercury are known to be harmful to your baby's brain development. Meet the specific nutritional needs for infant brain development, such as folic acid and fish oil. Many drugs are not recommended during pregnancy. So consult with your doctor before taking certain medications.

3. physical contacts
To caress and touch your baby is very important for emotional growth. Caressing their hair, legs and body also helps create neurological connections that are important for brain development. It will also help strengthen your bonding with your baby.

4. read stories
Although the baby may not understand the story that you read, but reading continuously will help your baby to hear, recognize words and their meanings. This process is important in helping your baby how to talk and build a vocabulary.

5. play signs
Encourage your baby to learn the signs when the age of 4 (four) months. Research showed that using sign language leads to increase in IQ and verbal language.

6. give intelligent toys
Toys play an important role in your baby's brain development. The key, selecting appropriate toys and activities must comply with the child stage of biological development.

7. Introduce a foreign language
At the right age, introduce your child to hear sounds and vocabulary of a foreign language. Play DVDs with foreign language, can increase your child's vocabulary. Some research shown the introduction of foreign languages should be initiated after the child's mother tongue is fluent.

Wilms tumor cancer in children

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Disease can come to anyone, not least in children. One of the dangerous disease that attack children is wilms tumor cancer. what is wilms tumor?

Wilms tumor is a kidney cancer that often occurs in children. Wilms tumor is also known as nephroblastoma, the most common malignant tumor affecting the kidney of children. The peak time of wilms tumor is about 3 to 4 years of age and rarely occurs after the age of 6 years. Although it can attack both kidneys, the disease tends to affect only one kidney. Its name is referring to the German surgeon Dr. Max Wilms (1867–1918) who first described this tumor.

Wilms tumor is believed to develop from cells of the immature kidney. Imagery technique may help physicians to determine the extent of cancer in wilms tumor and its treatment plan. The possibility of cure in children with Wilms tumor is very big.

symptoms of wilms tumor
Wilms tumor may not be detected since the beginning because it can grow without causing pain. When it's big, wilms tumor is generally made it known before having a chance to spread (metastasize) to other body parts. Children that is attacked may have symptoms:
1. abdominal swelling
2. There is a lump in the abdomen that can be felt
3. fever
4. Blood in the urine
5. Poor appetite
6. High blood pressure
7. constipation
8. Abdominal pain
9. nausea

what causes wilms tumor
The exact cause is still unknown. However, it is believed that cancer arises when the child is still developing in the womb and some cells that should form the kidneys fail to develop properly. Contrary, the cells proliferate in a primitive way, and became tumor that appears more clearly when the child was about 3 or 4 years.

Some cancers (including tumors) results from mutations in genes that control growth that let the cells proliferate uncontrollably. In some cases, cancer is caused by genetic defects are passed down from parent to child.

treatment wilms tumor
Treatments and medications in wilms tumor
The standard treatment for Wilms' tumor are surgery and chemotherapy. The results of laboratory tests are needed to determine whether radiation therapy is also required. Because this type of cancer is rare, doctors may suggest parents seek care in children's cancer center that has experience in treating cancer.

Surgery
Surgical removal of kidney tissue called a nephrectomy. Various types of nephrectomy include:

1. Simple nephrectomy.
In this operation, surgeons remove the kidney is attacked. The remaining kidney can increase capacity and take over the entire task of filtering the blood.

2. Partial nephrectomy.
Removal of the tumor and part of the kidney tissue. This is usually done when the other kidney is damaged or no longer exists.

3. Radical nephrectomy.
Doctors take kidney and surrounding tissues, including the ureter and adrenal gland. Lymph nodes in the vicinity can also be lifted.

At surgery, a pediatrician examined both kidneys and the abdominal cavity to prove the existence of cancer. Samples of kidney, lymph nodes and any tissue that looks abnormal is removed and examined under a microscope to identify cancer cells.

If both kidneys need to be removed, the child will need dialysis until he/she was healthy enough to transplant. Doctors who specialize in pathology will examine the tumor cells under a microscope and look for characteristics that indicate whether the cancer is aggressive or vulnerable to chemotherapy.

wilms tumor chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. This treatment led to cell division rapidly so normal cells are exposed to change quickly, as well as cancer cells. Consequently, these drugs can have side effects nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss and white blood cell count is low. Most side effects will improve after the drug was stopped and reduced during therapy.

At high doses, chemotherapy can destroy bone marrow cells. If a child will undergo high-dose chemotherapy, your doctor may tell the child that marrow cells are removed first. After chemotherapy, the marrow will be returned through an intravenous line, the procedure is called autologous bone marrow reinfusion.

wilms tumor radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses X-rays or other sources of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. Possible side effects include: nausea, fatigue and skin irritation. Diarrhea may occur after radiation to the abdomen.

gradually treatment
1. Cancer Stage I or II
If the cancer is confined to the kidney or nearby structures and types of tumor cells is not aggressive, the child will undergo removal of kidney tissue and some lymph nodes near the affected kidney. After that, followed by chemotherapy. Some stage II cancers are also treated with radiation.

2. Cancer Stage III or IV
If the cancer has spread within the stomach and can not be completely removed without endangering the structure as the main blood vessel, the radiation will be added to surgery and chemotherapy. The child may undergo chemotherapy before surgery to shrink the tumor.

3. Cancer Stage V
If tumor cells are present in both kidneys, the cancer of both kidneys will be removed during surgery and lymph nodes taken to see whether it contains the tumor cells. Chemotherapy is given to shrink the remaining tumor. Repeated surgery to remove the tumor as much as possible and functioning renal tissue is maintained. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be given next.

Pancreatic Cancer Attacks with a Silent

Friday, October 7, 2011

Pancreatic cancer is one type of deadly cancer disease, because of the difficulty of detecting symptoms, and it was discovered at an advanced stage. Pancreatic cancer often spreads rapidly, and in many people are not detected until it reaches an advanced stage when surgical removal is no longer possible to do.

Pancreatic cancer is actually a rare type of cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates, the disease was diagnosed in 230,000 people per year worldwide, 37,000 cases of which occurred in the United States. However, The American Cancer Society said 34,290 Americans died from pancreatic cancer each year, which puts the disease were fourth as a cause of cancer death in the U.S..

Pancreas, the organ of a 6 inch (15 centimeter) that located within the abdominal cavity, between the stomach and spinal. Pancreas near the liver, bladder, small intestine, duodenum, and spleen. Pancreas function is to produces pancreatic lymph containing enzymes trypsin, amylase, and lipase to help break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats from food. Lymph is poured into the duodenum. The pancreas also produces insulin as well as a number of hormones that help the body use and store energy from food.

The most common type of pancreatic cancers are adenocarcinomas (including 75 percent of pancreatic cancer cases) that usually derived from glandular cells lining the pancreatic duct. Most adenocarcinomas occur in the head of the pancreas. Adenocarcinoma usually does not occur before age 50. The average age at diagnosis is 55 years old. Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas usually spread to other parts of the body before it was found so its prognosisi is very low. Less than two percent of patients with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas can survive for 5 years after diagnosis.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is more common in smokers than nonsmokers. People who suffer from chronic pancreatic disease and those likely to suffer from long-standing diabetes (especially women) have a greater risk.

In addition, there are adenosquamous carcinoma, glucagonoma, and somatostatinoma. The type of pancreatic cancers that rarely, among others, are acinar cell carcinoma, giant cell tumor, mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, pancreatoblastoma, and serous cystadenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms
Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose in its early stages because almost without symptoms, whereas physical observations and blood tests often show normal results.

Patients with pancreatic cancer usually only show general symptoms such as high fever, weight loss, and abdominal pain. When cancer spreads, pain developed in the upper abdomen and sometimes the back. When eating or lying is sicker. Therefore, patients will be nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss and weakness.

In addition, because pancreatic cancer in the head can be associated with the disposal in the bile (digestive fluid produced by the liver) into the small intestine, jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes) caused by blockage of bile flow usually becomes symptomatic early.

Jaundice is accompanied by intense itching all over the body due to storage of bile salt crystals under the skin. Vomiting may result from things when pancreatic cancer in the head clogging the flow of stomach contents into the small intestine (blockage of the gastric tract) or blockage of the small intestine itself.

The first symptom is usually also indicated by pain and weight loss. At the time of diagnosis, 90 percent of people experience severe pain in the upper abdomen that penetrate to the rear, as well as significant weight loss.

At the beginning of the growth of pancreatic cancer usually does not cause any symptoms. Therefore, the disease is often called the "silent killer. Usually, symptoms are felt after an advanced stage, ie stage III or IV. Among other things, the color yellow (jaundice), both on the skin, eyes, feces, and urine. Other symptoms, pain in the gut, this is often caused the cancer getting too late to overcome because originally mistaken for gastroenteritis. Nausea, vomiting, lethargy, tiredness, loss of appetite, and weight loss are common symptoms that mark the cancer.

Only few people who lucky got known at an early stage pancreatic cancer. That is, if the cancer is blocking the bile duct so the patient experienced an early yellow.

Staging of Pancreatic Cancer
Stage set based on the size of the tumor, whether it has been already invaded other tissues or spread to other parts of the body.

Stage I, if the tumor is only in the pancreas. Stage II, if the tumor/cancer has invaded surrounding tissue, but not the blood vessels, and spread to the lymph nodes. Stage III, cancer has invaded the blood vessels near the pancreas. As for stage IV, if the cancer has spread to organs distant relative, such as the liver or lung.

Examination carried out through blood and laboratory tests, physical examination, CT scans, ultrasound, endoscopy, MRI, and biopsy (removal of tissue with a fine needle).

Pancreatic Cancer Treatment
Treatment of pancreatic cancer is with surgery. This is done if the cancer is detected in early stages. By removing the tumor, the chance to recover is quite big. For patients with cancer who are still measuring less than 2 cm, with no spread to lymph nodes, surgical removal of cancer can save patients up to five years at least. This possibility could reach 18-24 percent.

Type of surgery depends on the location of the tumor growth. Operating throw pancreatic cancer in the head called the Whipple procedure. This is the most common type of surgery. If needed, your doctor will also discard tissues nearby organs, such as some of duodenum, bladder, bile duct, part of the stomach, spleen, and nearby lymph nodes.

If the stage is advanced, usually chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This can reduce pain and improve quality of life of sufferers. The life expectancy is generally six months to a year.

Pancreatic cancer can indeed be deadly. Many sufferers die within a year after diagnosis. Less than four percent were able to survive up to five years after diagnosis.

Ralph Steinman, this Canadian-born researcher would never know that he won the Nobel Prize in Medicine 2011. Ralph Steinman (68 years) died on Friday last week after struggling for 4 years with pancreatic cancer. Another people, Co founders of Apple Inc, Steve Jobs has died after battling with pancreatic cancer since 2004. What exactly is pancreatic cancer? How many life chances of a patient with pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer is usually found after the cancer is in advanced stages making a small chance of living the patients. Until now the cause of pancreatic cancer is not known with certainty and is still in the stage of suspicion. But there are theories said that genetic factors play a role in the disease although not a major factor, as well as an imbalance in cell growth factor.

Because the location of the pancreas is in organs in the abdomen making it difficult to do early detection. If the cancer is still in an early stage then it will not appear symptoms, but if the cancer is already big and pressing the pancreatic lymph channels it will cause pain. But sometimes the pain is often regarded as stomach pain because it was close, so people often think it's an ulcer or gastritis.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer usually begins in the pancreatic tissue that lies horizontally on the back of the lower abdomen. This organ serves secretes enzymes that help digestion and the hormone insulin to regulate sugar metabolism.

If you often experience gastritis symptoms that intermittent, often leads us there. To diagnose it is usually performed as well as endoscopic and ultrasound examination

Pancreatic cancer can spread quickly and is rarely detected at an early stage, thus often cause of mortality. Besides the signs and symptoms of this cancer is most likely not appear until the cancer is large enough and surgery to its appointment has also been difficult.

Treatment
As for treatment depends on the stage, location of the cancer, patient's age and overall health. Whenever possible treatment of pancreatic cancer through surgery, but if it's not possible then the treatment is done to prevent pancreatic cancer continues to grow and spread to other parts
Prevention is difficult, but the most important is a healthy lifestyle, it's that same as primary prevention for other cancer types.

Ketogenic Diet can Increase the Kidney Function

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

With obesity levels that have become epidemic, a diet that contains an extreme amount of fat may sound absurd. But recent studies show high-fat foods and low in carbohydrates can improve kidney function in diabetic patients.

Ketogenic diet is a diet which is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, has previously been successfully used to eliminate or reduce seizures in children with epilepsy due to drug-resistant.

This is because when the body lacks carbohydrates and sugar, the body will use fat reserves for energy form.

The followers of the ketogenic diet is recommended to eat foods that have a lot of high fat, such as: meat. Conversely, foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as: bread, flour, rice, wheat, cereals, should be limited.

In a laboratory research in mice, researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York found that a diet high in fat and low in carbohydrates can prevent major complications of diabetes that is renal failure, quoted by Epharmapedia. This study involved two groups of mice that are genetically inclined to have type 1 or type 2 of diabetes.

The research team fed rats in the first group on a standard diet of carbohydrates and a second group with the ketogenic diet consisting of 87 percent fat, 5 percent carbohydrate and 8 percent protein. After eight weeks, renal failure did not occur in groups of mice on the ketogenic diet.

Doctors speculate that perhaps the ketogenic diet can have positive effects for people with diabetes by blocking the harmful effects of excess glucose and sugar, but this can cause serious problems in people with diabetes who do not have enough insulin.

As time goes, the glucose content that is too much in the blood can damage the retina of the eyes, nerves, blood vessels, and kidneys. Kidney damage due to diabetes, commonly known as diabetic nephropathy, which is the main cause of kidney failure. Once kidney failure occurs, it would require dialysis or kidney replacement through transplantation.

This study has significant implications for thousands of Americans who are diagnosed with kidney failure because of diabetes and its complications because of other possibilities. This study intended to show that dietary intervention is sufficient to prevent serious complications of diabetes.

However, although these research results is promising, but this diet is too extreme to be used in adult patients who had chronic diabetes. But, the results of the study can contribute to identifying drug targets and pharmacological interventions that can have subsequent effects resemble the effects of the ketogenic diet.

the Winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine 2011

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Three scientists shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine 2011 for their discovery of the body's immune system in which the jury considered open new horizons in the fight against cancer and other diseases.

The scientists are Bruce Beutler from the United States, Jules Hoffman from France and Ralph Steinman from Canada. All three scientists are known for their hard work in understanding the complex immune system, particularly in signaling molecules to release the antibodies and kill the cells as a response against microbes.

Understanding the mechanism will open the door to new drugs as well as control of autoimmune diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohns disease which occurs because the body's immune system inexplicably attacks the body.

Methods for the prevention and treatment of diseases is also possible with the improvement of vaccines in combating infection and stimulate the immune system to attacks tumor cells. The judges also said the discovery is helping scientists understand why it happened antibodies attack the body tissues, and also opened a gap in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Beutler (55) and Hoffmann (70) will share a half of the Nobel prizes worth US $ 1.48 million. Both found a protein receptor that activates the first step in the immune system. Since 1996, Hoffmann has worked in research laboratories in Strasbourg to investigate how fruit flies fight off infection and showed a gene called Toll, which is known to be involved in embryonic development and help identify and fight harmful microorganisms. Beutler widen the focus of his research in 1998 when he was still at the University of Texas found that the LPS receptor called Toll is also working in the same way in mice. It is at once prove mammals and fruit flies have the same immune path away.

Meanwhile, Steinman (68) won a half of Nobel prize in medicine because of his research that show adaptive response. In 1973 he discovered a new cell type namely dendritic cells and demonstrate its role in releasing T cells, killer in the immune system. T cells are also part of the immunological memory, which mobilize the strength and speed in the body's defense when the same microorganism cells to attack back. Steinman who also won the Lasker Prize in 2007 indicates the body's immune system is able to fight harmful microorganisms by ridding its own body's molecules.

Every year, early October is the time of the announcement of the winners of the Nobel prize, which usually begins with the announcement of the winner in medicine. All three scientists will receive their prizes in a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, which is the birthday of the founder of the Nobel Foundation, Afred Nobel who died in 1896.

Since long time the experts have to know that a person's eating patterns associated with risk of breast cancer. Besides the recommendation to avoid foods high in fat, the scientists are now advises women to do a Mediterranean diet which based on fruits, vegetables, grains, and olive oil, as the best path to healthier and protected from breast cancer.

Taste and benefits of olive oil for health has been known for thousands years. Olive oil contains a single-chain unsaturated fats, vitamin E and polyphenols. Two compounds that have efficacy reduce cancer risk. Research conducted by scientists from Spain to the mice in the laboratory showed that a compound in olive oil will impede the genes responsible for tumor cell growth in the breast. This oil is also working by turn off protein that becomes "food source" of cancer cells.

Dr.Eduard Escrich, chief researcher, advises us to consume 50 ml olive oil, or the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of pure olive oil every day. However, he said that the benefits of olive oil as an antidote to cancer can be picked when it is implemented in the long term as lifestyle.

Mediterranean diet has been recognized experts on the protection for a variety of diseases, like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and also for slimming. Mediterranean diet which is rich in fruits, fish, cereals and nuts not only keeps the body healthy but also prove to prevent stupidity. Mediterranean countries like Italy, Spain and Turkey have a high enough percentage of elderly people, because citizens like to eat tomatoes, fish and of course olive oil.
