Nuclear Radiation Hazards Guide

Friday, March 18, 2011
Responding to recent developments in Japan's nuclear crisis -following the failure of nuclear reactor cooling system in Fukushima after 9 magnitude quake-
, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued new guidelines to reduce the danger of radiation on health, especially in children and teenagers. Previously the UN also said so far the Japanese government measures to minimize the impact of radiation has the right, among others, evacuating residents within 20 km of the nuclear facilities and asked the people who live within a radius of 30 km to not leave the house.

Public within a radius of 50-100 km wear a mask in order to avoid exposure to radiation, avoid drinking tap water, always close the room and reduce out of the house. While Tokyo which is about 270 km from Fukushima nuclear power plant declared safe from radiation.

So far there has been no indication of food safety that is imported from Japan, including food products that are harvested in areas that are exposed, but crops and livestock in the area should be protected.

Here are recommendations issued by WHO:

The main radio nuclides released from nuclear power plants is radioactive cesium and radioactive iodine. Public may be exposed directly from the radionuclides from the air or food and drink contaminated by the material. Exposure to radiation can increase cancer risk.

If radio active iodine inhaled or swallowed, will settle in the thyroid gland and increase the risk of thyroid cancer. Risk can be reduced by consuming potassium iodine pills that will prevent precipitation of radioactive material. These pills must be given before or immediately after exposure to nuclear radiation. This step can reduce the risk of cancer in the long term. The use of potassium iodine tablets must be in accordance with the rules of the competent authorities.

If after exposure to radiation, you have to go into the room, remove all clothing to prevent contamination at home. Remove clothing and shoes and then store in plastic bags and then move away from your home, children and animals.

If you are asked to to be in the house, there lived in the most secure room ,with doors and windows tightly closed . Ventilation systems, such as cooling or heating system must be turned off.

Take a bath with warm water, soap and water. Report on the authorities of clothing and other personal items that may be contaminated.

Risk of thyroid cancer in person exposed to radiation is higher in the group of children and teenagers.

Avoid consuming vegetables and dairy products produced in areas near nuclear facilities could reduce radiation exposure. Food may be contaminated by radioactive material. The surface of the fruit, vegetable, or animal feed can be exposed to radiation from the air or rain water.

For the first step of prevention, vegetables and meat of cattle should be covered with plastic or tarp. Move the animal into the cage.
Radioactive can not contaminate food that is packaged well with plastic wrap or tin.

If the radiation levels are too high, it can cause flushed skin, hair loss, burns and acute radiation syndrome. Nuclear power plant workers and rescue workers may be the most exposed group than common people.

In the long term, radioactivity can also be formed in foods derived from land, river or sea water.

Fiber and Its Benefits

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Fiber consists of many different substances found in plant cell walls. In fact, fiber is not digestible by our digestion system. Even, fiber has no nutritional value. However, fiber is beneficial for our body. How could be?

Depending upon its ability to dissolve or not dissolve in water, fiber divided in two categories: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Some foods are predominant in only one, but others foods contain both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber means easily dissolves in water. Soluble fibers consist of pectins, gums, and mucilage. Foods contain Soluble fiber are oats, brown rice, seeds, rye, dried beans and peas, oat bran, barley, vegetables( especially corn, couliflower, sweet potatoes, and carrots), fruits (such as strawberries, bananas, apples, oranges, pears, and nectarines). Foods rich in soluble fiber have been known to help reducing the risk of heart disease, decrease blood pressure, and help control blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Insoluble fiber is the type of fiber that doesn't readily dissolve in water. Insoluble fiber includes cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. We can find Insoluble fiber in corn bran, wheat bran, fruits, whole wheat breads, cereals and vegetables (especially parsnips, potatoes (with skin), broccoli, and green beans). I've mentioned that some foods contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, right?

Insoluble fiber is responsible for moving waste material through your intestines. Foods rich in Insoluble fiber have been shown to decrease risk of colon cancer and diverticulosis. So, if you have a little constipated problem, high cholesterol, and want to reduce risk of colon cancer; eat some foods that rich in fiber.

Although not deadly, acne always be avoided because it is very disturbing performance. To overcome this, a detox could be the safest choice. Various pollutant from the environment or even food eaten daily is the most common of acne triggers. Chemical toxins are inhaled or ingested can interfere with metabolism, eventually leading to the appearance of acne.

Therefore the most reasonable way to overcome acne that is triggered by pollution and unhealthy eating patterns is to remove the toxins through detoxification or detox. The way is easy because it can be done simply by modifying the diet to be healthier.

The recommended diet menu

1. Start the day with fiber-rich breakfast menu to clean up the excess fat and cholesterol. For the drink select lemon juice and warm water, add a little honey if necessary.
